Hogar translates as "home." In Chile, an hogar also means a shelter for children
who cannot be with their family. There are many reasons for this separation: it could be a voluntary choice on the part of the
family, it could be the decision of the court due to an extreme situation of poverty, abuse, or neglect. The child's stay could be temporary - a matter of weeks or months - but it could also
be for the rest of their adolescence. Here in Santiago hogares range from weekday community centers to live-in institutions. Each child and
young adult reacts to their situation uniquely - some ask for friendship, some ask to be left alone, but none ask for pity. |
